Winterizing your Boat and Maintaining your Dock:
Winterizing your Boat
Winter is coming… It cannot be avoided. Take a few preventative steps in the Fall and your boat and dock will be in better shape when Spring rolls around. Most of these tips should sound familiar. However it never hurts to be reminded about winterizing your boat
- Change your Oil & Fluids – Flushing out the dirty oil & coolant will prevent contaminants and gunk from settling in while the boat sits for the Winter months.
- Top off the fuel – A full tank of gas can help reduce the chance of condensation in the gas tank – which causes corrosion.
- Cover and Check Often – Covering your boat is a “must”. It is equally important to check it to make sure the cover has not blown away or been damages. Animals love to nest in the covered boat. Keep it secure and check it. If you are renting Winter storage though Docks4Rent, you can arrange for the host to check and send periodic photos.
Simple and easy maintenance will help you to avoid bigger problems when you are ready to launch again in the Spring.
Maintaining Your Dock:
Stay “Green” because everything that you put on your dock will eventually wind up in the water. There are many environmentally safe cleaners on the market. However many people make their own “DIY” solution to clean a wood boat dock. Just mix a 3 to 1 blend of olive oil and white vinegar to remove minor stains and mineral salts.
For oil stains, scrub the area with a paste of baking soda and water and rinse it off after the paste dries. Use baking soda to clean the metal parts of your dock. Many people use pressure washers, but the water stream tends to raise wood splinters, so be careful to sand off any raised grain or splinters.
Every Spring, make a quick inspection of the structure of your dock checking for loose bolts, cracked or rotten wood.
Good maintenance will save you from more costly repairs.
