The idea for Docks4Rent was born as I was cruising through the canals and coves of the Jersey Shore in my friend’s Yamaha AR240. My friend, Fred, was filling me in on the outrageous fees that he was paying to a local marina, as we cruised past countless unused private docks and boat slips behind beautiful waterfront homes. Being a big fan of AirBnB and Uber, I began to ponder a way to efficiently connect boaters with people who have extra dock space in their backyard. By cutting out the middleman (marinas), homeowners could make some extra money and boat-owners save a bundle. Seemed like a no-brainer. Did this service already exist?
I found a few listings on Craigslist and a couple sites that all focused on marina-listing and offered very few private docks for rent. Plus, they all charged a fee to post a listing – regardless of whether the dock is ever rented out. I dove into building an accessible service where dock owners could list for free. And with that, Docks4Rent.com was launched!
Peer-to-peer “sharing” marketplaces offer a great alternative to commercial marinas and paid classified ads. Aside from the nice cost-savings, Docks4Rent enables a “gig economy” in which homeowners create a new stream of income without having to spend much time or effort.
We at Docks4Rent are real estate investors and landlords, so we understand the rental business and the importance of keeping both the owner and renter satisfied.
